The Affordable Care Act, or ACA, allows people who do not have coverage through an employer or other source, to buy their own health insurance. You cannot be denied coverage or charged more because of your HIV status, or any other preexisting condition. To be eligible for Ryan White HIV / AIDS Program medical care and treatment services, as well as the program’s other HIV support services, you must:

• Be diagnosed with HIV
• Have a low or moderate income*
• Have either no health insurance or insurance that does not fully cover the care you need

The Ryan White HIV / AIDS Program provides both core medical services as well as other essential support services.*

Core medical services include:

• Medical care and treatment
• Case management, including help with sticking to your daily medication regimen, as well as financial assistance
• Mental health treatment
• Substance use disorder treatment
• Dental care
• Medical nutrition therapy
• Home- and community-based health services

Other support services include:

• Housing
• Healthcare-related transportation
• HIV support groups and counseling
• Childcare
• Food bank/home delivered meals

When you seek HIV medical care and treatment through a Ryan White provider, most likely you will be assigned a case manager who will help you:

• Understand what services you are eligible to receive
• Apply for health insurance
• Find out whether you have to cover any of the cost

The Ryan White HIV / AIDS Program is a federally funded program established in 1990 to provide HIV care and support services for lower-income people living with HIV. It was named for Ryan White, a boy living with HIV in Indiana who, with his mother, confronted HIV / AIDS stigma and discrimination in the 1980s. White died at age 18, the year the legislation was passed. Today, the program provides care to more than half of all people living with diagnosed HIV in the United States.

Most program funds support primary medical care, treatment and support services that help individuals stay engaged in care. This includes case management, transportation and housing support. The program also fills in gaps in the insurance plans of people with HIV.
