For the fifth year in a row, Walgreens and Greater Than AIDS teamed up with health departments and local AIDS service organizations in the days leading up to National HIV Testing Day (June 27) to provide FREE HIV testing in more than 150 cities across the nation.
The activation is part of an ongoing effort between Greater Than AIDS and Walgreens to broaden the reach of HIV information and testing in non-traditional settings and to support local organizations’ outreach efforts.
Throughout the year, Walgreens and Greater Than AIDS distribute HIV informational resources at Walgreens stores with pharmacists on hand to offer one-on-one medication counseling and other support services that provide customers living with HIV/AIDS – and their families – with compassionate, confidential care.
FREE or low cost HIV testing is available in most cities year round. For a HIV testing and other services in your area, visit the AIDS.gov locator.
Some Walgreens locations also work with local partners to provide year round testing. In Virginia, for example, the Department of Health, is testing with Walgreens in stores in nearly 30 cities. For a complete list of participating stores in Virginia, click here.
During the Greater Than AIDS/Waglreens testing promotion, rapid HIV tests are administered onsite by trained counselors with results provided onsite. Alere North America, BioLytical Laboratories, D.I.V.A Foundation and OraSure Technologies have donated test kits to support the 2015 Walgreens/Greater Than AIDS promotion.
I Got Tested: What’s Next, a new online resource from Greater Than AIDS designed for mobile-phone accessibility, provides additional information about HIV testing and staying healthy, regardless of HIV status.
Walgreens distributed 150,000 copies of an 8-page printed version of the resource through stores and local partners as part of the 2015 activation. The CDC and Alere North America supported digital promotions.
With more than 180 health departments and AIDS service and other community-based organizations participating in 2015, the Walgreens/Greater Than AIDS partnership is the largest coordinated FREE HIV testing activation in the nation.
Since 2011, nearly 30,000 HIV tests – including nearly 10,000 in June 2015 – have been administered cumulatively at Walgreens/Greater Than AIDS-sponsored testing events across the nation.
